DataEase 4.53 DQL Procedure pEnumConfigRecs

Overview

This package contains DataEase DQL procedure pEnumConfigRecs and installation command file ENUMCFGS.DIN, to expedite its installation into any DataEase 4.x application.

DQL procedure pEnumConfigRecs creates a delimited ASCII text file that contains a record for every configuration record, including the data base configuration record, for the DataEase application into which it is installed. The text file can be imported into Microsoft Excel, and contains information that can be quite useful in diagnosing a variety of problems, such as slowdowns on individual workstations and accumulation of .TMP files in unexpected places.

Requirements

In order to use this package with a DataEase data base, you need these three things.

1. This package.
2. A user name and password that grants you High level access to the data base.
3. The destination directory for the file created by this report must have a short (8.3) MS-DOS name, such as C:\TEMP\, C:\Windows\TEMP\, or C:\WinNT\TEMP\, and you must create the directory before you run the procedure.

Installation

To install the report into a DataEase application, do the following.

1. Log into DataEase as a High level user.
2. Starting from the DataEase Main Menu, go to the System Administration Menu.
3. Choose the Database Utilities Menu.
4. Choose the Install/Convert an Application Menu.
5. Choose the Install DataEase Database option.
6. Enter the complete path to ENUMCFGS.DIN and press the Enter key.

Importing Report Output into Microsoft Excel

The output of the DQL procedure is a plain ASCII text file of variable length records. The first record contains the internal field names from the DataEase Configuration form. Fields are separated by a "|" character, usually called the vertical bar or "pipe" character. The record separator is a CR/LF pair, which is standard for text files createdd by MS-DOS and Windows programs.

When you open the file, Microsoft Excel may not recognize it as a delimited ASCII file, and it will definitely not recognize the field separator.

1. Make certain that the first panel indicates that the file is delimited. There are two radio buttons, marked delimited and fixed width. Click the delimited button.
2. Click the Next button to advance to the screen where you identify the field separator.
3. Enter a "|" ("pipe") character into the "Other" box.
4. Click the Finish button to import the data.

To preserve any formatting that you apply to the data and to avoid repeating the import, you must save the data in Excel format. You must use the Save As option from the File menu to do so.
